What Is This Report About?

In 2025, EML set out to uncover what Australians are really experiencing at work.

The result was Inside the Minds of Australia’s Workplaces, a groundbreaking annual national research series funded by the Mutual Benefits Program and delivered in partnership with Monash University’s Healthy Working Lives Group.

The State of Workplace Mental Health, the first report in the series, provided a national view of the relationship between work, mental ill-health, compensation claims and recovery outcomes.

Among its most significant findings, the report revealed that around four million Australians were living with a long-term mental health condition, yet only 0.33% had an accepted mental injury claim, highlighting a much larger workplace mental health challenge than workers compensation data alone suggests.

Explore the key findings below, download the full report, and access the employer checklist tool to help support a mentally healthy workplace.

The Snapshot

Creating safer, stronger workplaces starts here

Australia is at a critical turning point in how we understand and address mental health, especially in the workplace. Mental health conditions account for an increasing proportion of workers compensation and personal injury claims, while their impact on workers, families, communities and organisations continues to grow.

EML’s Inside the Minds of Australia’s Workplaces is more than an annual research program. It provides practical insights and recommendations to help employers better understand mental health risk, support recovery, and create workplaces where people can thrive.

Mental health is no longer just a wellbeing conversation - it’s a business imperative. The data shows that with the right approach, we can build safer, more resilient workplaces that benefit individuals, organisations, and the broader community.
