Young Workers Survey

Supporting the next generation to thrive at work.

Young workers are a vital part of today’s workforce – bringing energy, new perspectives and strong expectations of what good work should look like.

Evidence shows they are also navigating work under increasing pressure.

Insights from mental health research experts SuperFriend, highlight that while young workers are optimistic and value positive workplace cultures, many are experiencing high levels of psychological strain early in their careers.

This creates both a risk and an opportunity – to better understand their experiences and take meaningful action to support them.

Young Workers aged from 18-24 years are encouraged to complete the survey.

Survey open from 15 May to 26 June, 2026

What the data tells us

Recent findings from SuperFriend recent research Indicators of a Thriving Workplace (TWI) and targeted youth research reveal a clear pattern:

  • 73% of young workers (18–24) report moderate to severe psychological distress
  • 28% have taken time off work due to mental health challenges
  • 15% are considering leaving their job within 12 months
  • 1 in 3 report low psychological safety at work
  • Only 7.5% access formal supports such as Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs)

At the same time, young workers are clear on what helps them thrive at work:

  • Supportive leadership
  • Trust and team connection
  • Manageable workloads
  • Psychologically safe environments

What this means for workplaces

Young workers are motivated to thrive but need the right conditions to do so.

Workplaces that invest in:

  • Supportive and capable leadership
  • Psychologically safe environments
  • Strong team connection
  • Proactive management of psychosocial risks

are more likely to see positive outcomes in mental health, retention and performance.

Why we are running the Young Workers Survey

This survey will help to:

  • Build evidence on psychosocial risks impacting young workers
  • Understand real experiences across industries
  • Identify practical actions to support prevention and early intervention
  • Inform tools, training and resources that support safer, healthier workplace for our employers

Who should be encouraged to participate:

  • Employees early in their careers (18-24 years old)
  • Apprentices and trainees
  • Casual and part-time workers
  • Young people working while studying
  • Young workers across all industries

Participating organisations can register here to receive the insights report, benchmarked against national and industry data – to be published later in August 2026.
