SunSmart Workplaces Toolkit – Helping to protect workers under the sun

What is the SunSmart Workplaces Toolkit?

The SunSmart Workplaces Toolkit, developed in partnership with the Cancer Council NSW, is a practical, evidence-based resource designed to help employers manage ultraviolet (UV) radiation as a workplace hazard.

It brings together clear guidance, tools and ready-to-use resources to support organisations in embedding sun safety into everyday workplace health and safety practices.

Your workforce is your most valuable asset, and prevention is one of the most powerful ways to protect it. Investing in initiatives like this SunSmart Toolkit can help you take practical steps to keep your people safe and well at work. Strong workplace safety starts with action.'

Why is this important?

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, with two in three people expected to develop it in their lifetime. Outdoor workers are at significantly greater risk due to prolonged exposure to UV radiation.

UV radiation is a known carcinogen, placing it in the same category as hazards such as asbestos and tobacco. This makes managing sun exposure not just good practice, but a critical part of an employer’s duty of care.

Employers who take proactive steps can better protect their people, reduce risk and support long-term health outcomes.
