Stuart's mission was to be a Police Officer, helping people in the worst times of their lives. So when Stuart was medically retired he felt like he lost his identity, his sense of worth. Years of mandatory training gave Stuart a long list of qualifications but he didn't know what else he could do.
 

 
Stuart discovered that the skills and experiences gained and mandatory training completed during his service as a Police Officer added up to an impressive collection of transferrable skills. In his new career as a Compliance Officer, Stuart's mission has changed but he still has a mission: to ensure the safety of people.

I knew my career was coming to an end and that terrified me,” Stuart said.

Stuart’s first priority after medical discharge was to get well again.

“It was hard accepting that the job had gotten to me.”

Stuart’s biggest tip for anyone going through career transition is to put your hand up for help, “there are people who care about you – friends, family, colleagues, your case manager and rehab provider,” Stuart said.

“I didn’t know what a CV was and hadn’t been to an interview in 30 years,” Stuart said.

Stuart worked with his occupational rehabilitation provider to develop a CV and learn how to adapt it for each role he was interested in applying for. He trained in interview skills and participated in mock-interviews.

“If I didn’t have that support I would’ve failed. I would not be where I am now. Being able to put my hand up was a very hard step. I struggled at first to engage with help, but there was nothing to be afraid of,” Stuart said.

I had to find a different purpose without the Police uniform” Stuart said.

Stuart’s ability grew over time. He built good rapport with the people supporting him, and is now content with his life, doing something he loves, and as Stuart says: “I have my self-worth back.”
